Freemasonry took a progressive step forward at the Highcross Lodge's Burns Night White Table event on 6th February, as women Freemasons were invited to attend the Festive Board for the first time in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland's history. This landmark occasion saw members of both men's and women's Masonic orders come together to celebrate the life of Robert Burns, himself a proud Freemason, in an evening of tradition, fellowship, and inclusivity.
The event, held at Freemasons' Hall in Leicester, followed the time-honoured format of a Burns Night supper and the inclusion of women Freemasons at the Festive Board was met with enthusiasm and appreciation from both Brethren and guests. The Master from the Coeur De Lion Lodge No.195, Carole Nesbitt, expressed her gratitude for the invitation, highlighting the importance of collaboration and mutual respect between Masonic organisations.
This is just one example of how the Province is exploring new ways to attract members and develop social activities. The Head of Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons, Peter Kinder, commented, "Burns' ideals of brotherhood extend beyond gender, and this event is a perfect example of how Freemasonry can bring people together."
The success of this inclusive Burns Night White Table has set a positive precedent, with many attendees expressing their hope that such gatherings will become a cherished tradition in the years to come.
